Arnotts
Lodge is providing the following links in the belief that by facilitating
your Big Island stay we will create a more pleasant experience for
you. We believe there is enough Big Island and few enough small Hotel
operators that we can share our good fortune in attracting travelers
like you and enhancing your stay by making it easy for you to arrange
your trip. You can also save on car rentals and Inter
Island air coupons by reading other sections of this web site,
you do not have to stay with us, or visit this Island, for these
services.
Aloha......Doug Arnott

Guide
books are a good source of information about Budget travel,
we highly recommend Lonely Planet, Frommers, Fodors, Lets
Go, Hawaii Rough Guide & the new Hostels USA. The Travel
shelves of your nearest Borders or Barnes & Noble (in
the USA) or YOUR favourite book source are a mine of information.
Be aware that some comprehensive guide books such as Frommers
come in versions for differant price brackets such as "Hawaii
on $60 a day" etc. |

| Hostel
style accommodation and Camping on the Big Island. |
 |
 |
Updated March 2007, if you have visited this page before, please read update.
Please read what Lonely Planet and other Backpacker style guidebooks have to
say about Arnott's Lodge and realize that we have no
interest in giving you incorrect information. What follows is an honest
assessment of "How it is" on the Big Island and we will keep this updated as
things evolve.
The Big Island has two sides, The Hilo side where we are located and the Kona
side over 120 miles(200km) away, both Hilo and Kona now have direct mainland
flights, Hilo's via ATA from Oakland.
Hilo is the Eco Tour center for Volcanoes National Park and its active Lava
flows, Mauna Kea Mountain with the worlds largest Telescopes and incredible
views and hikes, all the Valleys and waterfalls, Punaluu Black sand Beach with
its Turtles and Puna with its warm springs are on Hilo side, the things for
which the Big Island is famous.
Kona Airport is 10 miles from Town and 20 miles from Budget accommodation
Manago
Hotel or Koa Hale Hostel (formerly Patey's) on the hill above Mc Donald's,
its URL changes so Google it up.
Arnotts is minutes from the Airport which has reliable taxi service. We have a
free 8:00am daily departure shuttle and $3 a day bikes so you can get around.
There are also two older Hotels right in Kona Uncle
Billy's and the King
Kamehameha Hotel at Kona Pier.
No budget Hotel or Hostel that we know of has shuttle service, although the
county bus does go to Manago once a day..
Be aware however that certain annual events completely sell out Kona Town,
like the Ironman competition.
Your best bet by far, if you are a backpacker on a budget, and are looking for
camping or dormitory accommodation, is to fly in to Hilo , catch a taxi to our
Lodge and plan to do the Lava Hike and the Mauna Kea Summit and Star show. Use
our $3 a day bikes to check out the town, then network with other travelers or
ask us questions and get set up by sharing rental cars or learning the pros and
cons of "hitching" and the free daily bus system. If your flight lands in Kona
you need to get to Koa Hale in Kona. There is a network of good campgrounds around
the Island starting with our tenting area at the Lodge (there is no free or county
camping anywhere near Hilo).
Come into Hilo get set up, get latest information and permits, in some cases
we provide "space available" inexpensive transport to Volcano or North to Waipio
if your needs coincide with a tour to that area. While hitchhiking is technically
illegal, many people do. Many are given rides to specific places out of friendliness
and we have yet to hear of a negative experience. Our Lodge is well known and
Backpackers considered honored guests of our Island . Police ask that you do not
solicit rides in hazardous traffic areas and that you stand still rather than
move along the roadside.

Guide Books
Over our 17 years in business we were very fortunate to catch the attention of
Lonely Planet guidebook early
on, being listed in its Backpacker and Budget travel sections made a huge difference
to our ability to survive and improve our Lodge. Lonely Planet's writers never announce
their presence and pay full price for everything which makes their reporting highly
objective and tends to keep Hotels and Hostels on their toes as you never know who may
be the Lonely Planet writer. Even with the proliferation of web based travel advice we
continue to see many guests show up at our lodge carrying Lonely Planet.
As time went by other excellent Guidebook companies discovered us and give us positive Listings,
Frommer's and Fodor's
are both reputable books with a mine of information about Hawaii, some editions are
geared to different economic levels of traveler.
Hidden Hawaii does not appear to have its own website but is available through
Amazon
as is The Big Island Revealed Wizard Publications
or through Amazon
both of these are excellent books for the Big Island.
Insiders Guide---Off the beaten path is a book that you have to find at a bookstore, Let's Go,
however a mainstream guidebook has its own website
Roughguide to the Big Island
and The Big Island Trail Blazer
has its own website or can be purchased through bookstores such as Barnes and Noble.
This leaves the last book of our current research Travel Smart Hawaii
Travelmatters.com or
Globecorner.com
When selecting Guide books for Hawaii one has to realize that there are a very
large number of different things to do on each Island so an overall Hawaii Guidebook
may not be as good as a Big Island Guidebook. This is of course also true of a United
States guidebook which may not even get down to details of budget accommodation in a
small town like Hilo.
Most large well organized bookstores such as Borders or
Barnes and Noble
have extensive racks of guidebooks to assist you with your journey and its preparation.
We are providing this page as a service and Doug Arnott as of September 2007
will go to our local and Oahu Borders and get names of other books that represent
us and the Big Island in a fair and objective manner.
For general Hawaii information there is also the Visitors Bureau site which
lists members on every Island, most reputable visitor facilities are members.

Doug Arnott our owner discovered
this delightful Motel while looking for reasonable accommodation
in a "near beach" area. It is very ordinary looking but super friendly,
helpful management and staff make the place special. The property
is right on Pacific Coast Highway (Sepulveda) about 10 minutes South
of LAX Airport. While it is right on this busy road it has double
glazed windows and Aircon, a swimming pool and Hotel run restaurant
right on the grounds that has the best value breakfasts we found
on our whole trip.
For Internet access there is a nearby Kinko's at Artesia and you
are minutes to major shopping including Galleria (Artesia and Hawthorne)
that my Lady friend voted "Best mall in the Southwest United States".
Major Beaches and the fun of Manhattan Beach or Hermosa Beach are
minutes away. Proximity to the Airport and major car rental drop
off centers is an added bonus.
Rates range from $59 to $69 a double which is not Backpackers rates
but this memo is for our Budget category travelers as our backpackers
will be reading Lonely Planet !!
Since Los Angeles is so fast moving, we highly reccoment you refer to
Lonely Planet GUidebook.
Other than Seahorse Inn above, we do not personally know of any
other facility that we can recommend.

Doug
Arnott and his Lady friend Kathy returned July 7th 03 from a trip
to Sydney, Perth, Margaret River wine area South of Perth and on
up to Broome in the tropical North West. He finished the trip by
flying to Cairns where the town has undergone a revolution since
his last visit in 1995. Of particular interest are two purpose built
multi million $$$ hostels one in Cairns and one in Port Douglas just
to the North. Doug and Kathy stay in the budget category so Kathy
can have her own bathroom but enthusiastically visit Hostels and
meet staff and owners. Below are listed Hotels we stayed at in the
Budget Category, some restaurants, as we are foodies when we travel
and the Hostels we visited....each with a small comment.
Serpent
Hostel Cairns ... (See Picture Gallery) ...
along with Parrotfish in Pt Douglas, this has to be the best and
most superbly thought out Hostel we have ever seen. It sets a new
standard and since our return we have been planning how to catch
up to such a major advance in the Hostel trade. We met the busy but
extremely helpful Front desk manager Martin Valentine.
Parrotfish Lodge, Port Douglas ... (See
Picture Gallery) ... was brought to my attention above by Bob
on his trip. Like Serpent it is new, superbly designed and has every
amenity a backpacker could want. Petra and Debo are the friendly
owner/managers. It is in easy walking distance of all major amenities.
Port Douglas is a HAPPENING place !!
Cable Beach Backpackers
in Broome ... (See Picture Gallery) ...
is definitely the place to stay in the far Northwest, with large
kitchens and bathroom facilities a pool, a bar, projector TV, pool
table and many more amenities it is also right up there although
not as new as those above.....it is also close to the ENORMOUS Cable
beach. Tony Vuletic is the hard working owner/ manager and showed
us around.
Roebuck Bay Hostel right in the heart of Broome was very kind in
facilitating our internet access however we would hesitate to recommend
a stay there. It receives bad reviews in guide books and is not up
to current standards......Go to Cable Beach !!
In Broome Graham Macarthur of Halls Creek and Bungle Bungle Tours
(08) 9193 7267 was immensely helpful and booked us on two flying
combined with ground tours that were superb. Due to VAST distances
no tours are cheap in Broome. His office is just around the corner
from Henrys Cafe....anyone going to Broome...a micro town, will get
to know Henrys and the open air theatre next door. Internet access
abounds in Broome with heavy competition.
In Broome, Matso's Cafe....just installing a Micro brewery, was the
up market choice for superb dinners and service, Cafe Carlottas,
BYOB was excellent Italian food. Broome is spread out and one should
get a car to fully enjoy the level above backpackers.....for them
there are all kinds of tours and activities. Old Zoo Cafe near Cable
Beach Backpackers is the lead trendy Restaurant after Matso's.
In the Kimberly wilderness, far North Western Australia, there
is an Oasis....Mt. Hart Wilderness Lodge . We flew
into this fascinating ranch or Station Gallery in
the middle of nowhere but close to the world class geological features
of this vast underinhabited region. Taffy Abbotts the owner will
greet your small plane on the short dirt strip and invite you in
to a full service bar for a few cold ones. A sumptuous lunch is served
daily to the air tour customers who fly in and the Hotel Guests who
are intrepid enough to drive in. Kathy and I wished we had time for
an overnight as the Stars in this lightless environment must be incredible
with both Northern and Southern hemisphere visible. A visit to this
facility is included in many Airtours out of Broome that visit the
Kimberly Gorges and the more distant Bungle Bungle ranges.

Today most backpackers carry a copy of Lonely Planet for the places they are visiting. Tips are given on sights, accommodation, transport, eating and of course Hostels along the way.
We highly recommend you to this series of books which is extremely well known outside the United States and is increasingly becoming known to young and old US travelers.
